How Enneagram types map to Big Five traits

The Big Five is the most researched model of personality traits. Comparing Enneagram types with it is a useful way to see what the Enneagram may be capturing, and what it adds or misses.

The short answer

Some research has reported associations between Enneagram type scores and Big Five traits, and the systematic review by Hook and colleagues discussed this as part of the evidence on validity. Conceptually, several patterns make sense: Sevens are expected to score higher on extraversion, Ones on conscientiousness, Sixes and Fours on neuroticism, Twos on agreeableness and Fives on openness with lower extraversion. The overlap is partial, and the models remain different kinds of tools.

How to read the table

These are theoretical expectations derived from type descriptions, not fixed findings, and individuals vary widely. A Five can be highly extraverted; a Seven can be very conscientious. The table is useful for thinking about what each type description implies in trait terms, and for noticing where the descriptions are vague.

What's actually going on

Traits and types answer different questions. The Big Five places each person on five continuous dimensions, which captures degrees of difference. The Enneagram assigns a dominant motivational type, which aims to explain why behavior happens. If Enneagram types were only disguised trait combinations, they would add little. If they capture motivational information beyond traits, they could add something. Research has not yet settled how much unique information the Enneagram provides.

When to use each

  • Use the Big Five when you want a research-backed description of traits.
  • Use the Enneagram when you want to reflect on motivation and growth.
  • Use both to compare how each describes you, noting agreements and gaps.

Big Five and Enneagram questions

Do Enneagram types correlate with Big Five traits?+

Some studies report associations, but the overlap is partial and varies by study.

Which Big Five trait fits Enneagram Seven?+

Sevens are generally expected to score higher on extraversion and openness.

Is the Enneagram just the Big Five in disguise?+

Not necessarily; it focuses on motivation, though how much it adds is still debated.

Which model is more accurate?+

The Big Five has much stronger research support.
